Forward thinking companies are going on the offensive when it comes to talent management strategies, aiming to drive workplace efficiency by focusing on retention, development and empowerment of top talent. Deloitte offers the following tips to guide your company on the road to recovery.

1. Take advantage of the continuing globalization of talent and leadership markets.

2. Know your critical leaders and most critical talent. Keep your talent pipeline robust enough to deliver those critical skills.

3. Prepare for a workforce that is more mobile and quicker to pursue new career opportunities.

4. Tailor your strategies to address the generational and geographic diversity of your workforce.

5. Show your employees both the money and the love. Communicate your employer brand as clearly to employees as you communicate your product brand to customers.

6. Know what it takes to stay ahead of your competitors in retaining critical talent, developing new leaders, implementing workplace planning and driving innovation.

7. Create clear career paths for employees at all levels.

8. Align your leadership development programs with your long-term business goals.

9. Know the real impact of talent retention and voluntary turnover on your bottom line.

10. Be a beneficiary -- not a victim -- of the resume tsunami.

One big problem employers are facing now is engagement. Engagement levels among employees are low. I believe that's partly because they're doing too much work for, sometimes, less pay. But I think there are other factors going on. People have learned that they shouldn't be too attached to their employers, that they need to be managing their careers and that will involve being at a number of companies. I would think that doesn't help your feeling of engagement.

There certainly seems to be a disconnect between employers and employees. A recent survey found that 80 percent of hiring managers expect less than 5 percent of their employees to leave the company voluntarily in 2010, that same survey found that 60 percent of employees plan to pursue new job opportunities if the economy improves this year.

Sheryl--that's quite a survey finding! If the economy doesn't improve a lot, the employers will be right. Employees won't leave. But not because they want to stay. To the contrary. It's the makings of a very unhappy workplace.

As the economy starts to improve, organizations are taking new directions when it comes to managing their talent, according to a new Ernst & Young global talent management survey.

Strategic HR initiatives are focused on increasing employee engagement levels by building in flexibility to address the needs of today's diverse pool of talent. According to the survey, the top three talent management initiatives respondents plan to implement include:

Building their internal talent pipeline to fill critical future needs (64 percent);

Understanding and coordinating global talent resources to fill key positions (33 percent);

Offering flexible work strategies such as job sharing, telecommuting, flex hours and phased-in retirement (31 percent)

I'd love to hear more about how companies are fostering connections among geographically dispersed employees. not to mention among different cultures. It always amazes me that any organization is able, say, to create teams with members located around the world, probably from different cultures, and make it work. It's all very well and good to talk about virtual teams, but making them succeed is another thing.
