Burlington Northern CEO says ‘so long’ to analysts, hedge funds

Posted by MQuinn in Warren Buffett, private equity, Dealscareer/managementBurlington Northern

Chief executives of publicly-traded companies can be forgiven if they occasionally daydream about going private. No more SEC filings. No more earnings calls with pesky analysts. There's no longer that tricky task of pleasing shareholders on a quarterly basis and implementing a long-term strategy. Well, maybe that part isn't entirely gone, but it won't be quite as bad. Probably.

But then they wake up to the fact that the alternative might be selling their company to a leveraged buyout shop, which brings a host of new problems: New overbearing investors and reporting requirements, plus, in all likelihood, a heavy debt load. They might as well throw out the income statement and learn to look at cash flows in even more excruciating detail than they already did.

This all sounds good but Mr. Rowghani still has his work cut out for him. Here are three challenges he will face as the first CFO of Twitter:

At long last, an economist takes head-on the anti-Keynesian nonsense we've been hearing from both the right and center (or at least from President Obama himself in his State of the Union address) that says the government should treat its budget the same way families do, by tightening its belt during hard times.

Randall Wray of the University of Missouri spells things out pretty clearly here, but let me hit the high points for you.

A mixed picture on jobs

I searched in vain through news reports over the weekend for an explanation of how unemployment could decline in January, from 10 percent to 9.7 percent, when job losses grew, albeit by only 20,000.

Surely, I thought, the explanation lay in a decline in the labor force because unemployed workers had given up looking, which is the usual explanation for a decline in unemployment that's accompanied by more job losses.
