Tech CFOs scaling back offshore outsourcing

Tech companies are souring on outsourcing.

According to a survey of 100 chief financial officers at technology companies by BDO USA, LLP, just 35 percent said they are currently outsourcing services or manufacturing to companies outside of the US. This represents a 43 percent decrease from the 2009 high when 62 percent of companies were outsourcing and a slight decline from 2010 (37 percent).

With Intel’s announcement this week of record quarterly profits—the highest in its history—companies are once again growing their IT budgets and investing in new or updated technology. But given still-tight lending markets and the desire to make best use of liquidity, that spend will be highly targeted on projects with quick return-on-investment.

Intel reported revenues of $10.8 billion this quarter, garnering gross margins of 67 percent and $0.51 earnings per share. According to the company, much of their growth was driven by corporate investment in new hardware as companies look to replace outdated servers, PCs and the like.

H-P's CFO sees a wintertime turnaround

Here's a sign that the business economy is feeling the tickle of a turnaround: Hewlett-Packard's CFO said in a speech in San Francisco this week that the company was expecting gangbuster business as the year winds down and we inch toward springtime.

"There's a sense -- at least within our organization -- that there is a bit of a budget flush going on and we want obviously to be there to take advantage of it," Cathie Lesjak said at a Barclays technology conference, adding that H-P "is in a very different place than we were a year ago."
