CPAs much more pessimistic about economy

Senior level CPAs have turned much more pessimistic about the economy. And somewhat surprisingly, they are partly concerned about deflation.

Just 21 percent of CPAs serving as C-suite executives said they are optimistic about the US economy, way down from 40 percent who were optimistic in May and the lowest level since April 2009, according to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the University of North Carolina's Kenan-Flagler Business School's latest Quarterly Economic Outlook Survey. What's more, pessimists outnumbered optimists by a two-to-one margin.

The PCAOB has had a pretty good run of late. It all started with the SCOTUS handing them a loss that was really a win and the Board has, most recently, gotten ambitious with new risk assessment standards. What's more is the call of acting Chair Dan Goelzer to have the Board's enforcement inspections held publicly so audit firms can't get all mysterio about what they did and did not do to warrant said inspection.

Now £15.7 billion may not seem like much to you if you are, say, Bill Gates or Ben Bernanke but for PricewaterhouseCoopers UK, it may be the magic number that gets the firm into a whole steaming pile of trouble.

At the risk of setting off a corporate war between the sexes, I feel compelled to report the findings of a new study that shows women are more trustworthy than men in reporting companies' financial results.

Come to think of it, the findings are in line with the general impression I've gotten that the distaff sex is better than its counterpart at financial regulation.

Last week, the SEC continued its "Bustin' Up Fraud" tour by charging Memphis-based Morgan Keegan & Company, Morgan Asset Management, and two employees, James C. Kelsoe, Jr. and Joseph Thompson Weller with "fraudulently overstating the value of securities backed by subprime mortgages."

Okay, who's got no plans on Friday? Work? Bah. How about you go to the Nets game against the Orlando Magic instead? Sure they're terrible but you'll get a coupon that is redeemable at a Roni Deutch Tax Center to get your state return done for free (a $29 value!).
