At the risk of setting off a corporate war between the sexes, I feel compelled to report the findings of a new study that shows women are more trustworthy than men in reporting companies' financial results.

Come to think of it, the findings are in line with the general impression I've gotten that the distaff sex is better than its counterpart at financial regulation.

If you think bailed-out -bankers' bonuses are capable of producing a populist backlash, consider the supplemental executive retirement plans that most companies use to pump up senior executives' pay-outs. These are specially designed, tax-deferred plans that let executives get around limits on benefits they can get from regular so-called "qualified" plans in which all employees take part.

According to new research, the plans create an easy incentive for executives to engage in earnings management to pump up stock prices and their SERP benefits with it.

This take on the Lehman saga, as reported by Andrew Ross Sorkin, has implications for other dealmakers, and not just those out to keep their companies from failing.

According to Sorkin, Lehman CEO Dick Fuld ignored the nation's top banking lawyer when trying to do deals that would save the investment bank, choosing instead to negotiate an acquisition or investment himself.
