Google Chrome OS

Chrome
OS is getting much love from the blogosphere, even though details are
still scarce about Google's potential Windows killer, slated to launch
late next year. Google promises that the Linux-based software will be
lightweight, speedy and secure -- an antidote to Microsoft's bloated
operating system. Given Google's fondness for simple interfaces and
streamlined products, that's not much of a stretch. But Google doesn't
see Chrome OS as a new operating system so much as a reinvention of the
idea. Unlike its Android OS for smartphones and netbooks, Chrome is
based on Google's browser and will essentially make the Internet your
OS. Applications will run off the Web; your documents will be stored in
the cloud. Will it support desktop applications? Good question. Will
Google be able to leverage its Web app experience to deliver a
larger-scale offering? Before people get too excited, let's remember
that while Google dominates the search game, its Web browser, through
seeing gains, has just 2 percent of the market. A slayer of Windows?
It's not even an Explorer killer.
