Customization and Standardization
According to Cramm's research, 70 percent of IT's budget is spent on "keeping the lights on" rather than innovation. IT leaders can help their business partners help them by driving down the year-over-year IT spend as a percent of revenue to increase the amount available for innovation.
Business partners in turn can help IT by fully using the technology already in place. (On average, people only use about one-third of the available features of the technology they have, says Cramm.) When developing new technology, both parties must consciously distinguish between necessary and unnecessary customization.
