Apple Hates the Environment

For years, Apple was on the receiving end of numerous Greenpeace complaints, particularly for the company's usage of PVC and BFRs. CEO Steve Jobs responded in May 2007 by announcing plans to eliminate those chemicals by 2009 -- mission accomplished -- improve e-waste recycling and build a "greener" Apple. The two made nice, relatively speaking.

But in May 2008, a non-profit called Climate Counts rekindled the subject by giving Apple 11 out of a possible 100 points for its "commitment to fighting global warming." It was the lowest score for an electronics company, though it was 2 points higher than Apple's 2007 rating. The media gleefully ran with the report and Apple got a thorough drubbing.

The problem? The study was questionable at best: Apple essentially got low scores for not sharing its environmental plans. RoughlyDrafted Magazine, one of a handful of publications to take a critical look at the report, suggested that the score was payback for Apple's declining to help fund the group: "Climate Counts enacted its revenge by singling Apple out as a bad company based on meaningless, invented metrics."
