Women entrepreneurs showcase their talents

This will be quite a week for women entrepreneurs. Not only is the first-ever gathering of East coast-West coast women entrepreneurs—and potential start-up investors—happening in Silicon Valley, but there are also events worldwide for women—and men—during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Such events are critical for encouraging women to seek out financing and partnerships for growing their small businesses or business ideas.

But for me, two events in particular stand out and are indicative of the unique character of women entrepreneurs.

First, there is the “Alley to the Valley” event in Menlo Park from Thursday. It will bring together high-net-worth women from the East coast with entrepreneurs from the West coast.

The goal is to bring some of the risk-taking perspective of female Silicon Valley venture capitalists and entrepreneurs—who are enmeshed in the West coast entrepreneurial culture—with successful women from the East coast who may not have the network and background to effectively invest in start-ups.

Topics of discussion will include such things as handling numerous angel investments and steering clear of common mistakes made by female entrepreneurs, reports the New York Times.

Second, an event next week for women in the United Arab Emirates—run by women’s entrepreneurship organization Heels and Deals—will bring together like-minded women for a speed-networking event that gives participants the opportunity to meet and hear about a wide range of start-ups.

Participants have two minutes to explain their businesses or business ideas to their speed networking partner before moving on to the next discussion—leaving participants with a broad range of new contacts that can be invaluable in forwarding their businesses.

The night is one of innumerable events occurring worldwide for Global Entrepreneurship Week next week.

Events such as these are an important way for female entrepreneurs to showcase themselves and their businesses to other women—both the heads of other start-ups, who could potentially become partners in one form or another, and women investors.

This is particularly critical at a time when many mentoring programs may be on the chopping block, as I discussed here.
